The Hague is one of the three major cities in the Netherlands and, although Amsterdam is the capital, the parliament is seated in The Hague.

The Hague is rich in historical monuments and houses several museums. There is an abundance of café’s, restaurants and bars.

Shopping in The Hague is also very pleasant as The Hague is rich in promenades and other shopping areas.

The adjacent city of Scheveningen is known for its beach resort and is in the summer very lively.

The city of Delft is also nearby, known for its earthenware and well worth a visit.

 

As you can see there are many interesting sites to see and an extensive social program will allow you to visit them. The Hague is fun for everyone!

Tours

We have arranged four different tours, which can be booked individually. These tours require a minimum of 10 participants for them to be arranged as part of the congress. In the event of not meeting this limit we will do our best to arrange individual tickets for these tours with the local tourist information service.

The Hague Centre Tour (5 hours)

An introduction to the history AND today’s culture of The Hague. It includes a visit to the most prominent building at Het Binnenhof (i.e. Parliament buildings) and the former prison which will introduce you to the history of jurisdiction in the Netherlands.

Timetable:

10.00–10.45h.

Starting at the Grand-Café Dudoc with coffee and the famous Dudoc’s Apple-pie.

10.45–12.15h.

Guided walking tour through the city centre of The Hague.

During this walk you will visit the “Ridderzaal” at “Het Binnenhof”, build in the 13th-14th century as Castle for the Counts of Holland. Since 1904 H.M. the Queen yearly addresses the Parliament in the “Ridderzaal”.

12.30–13.45h.

Lunch at City tavern “ ‘t Goude Hooft”.

14.00-15.00h.

Visit to Museum “De Gevangenpoort”. De “Gevangenpoort” is the former prison of the Court of Holland. During the visit there will be a short presentation and there will be opportunity to see the collection of punishing and torture equipment.

We would like to invite all delegates to the welcome reception in the GEM-Photomuseum at 18:00 on Thursday 13th September, where the Burgomaster of The Hague, Mr. Wim J. Deetman, will officially open the congress.

Friday 14th September 2007

The Hague Seen from the Water Tour (3 hours)

It might be hard to imagine that The Hague has been a city with canals just as Amsterdam. Thinking of The Hague one doesn’t imagine canals… This tour will prove you wrong!

Starting at the Bierkade you will enjoy a 90 minute boat tour on the canals of The Hague. During the tour a guide will tell the tales of historic and today’s The Hague.

The tour will lead you along the colourful parts of The Hague to Royal The Hague, the
Jugendstilbuildings of “Buurtschap 2005” and lastly along the new The Hague centre and its
remarkable skyline.

After the boat tour you will be welcomed at the “Van Kleef Distillery Museum” for a guided tour of about an hour. This will lead you along distillery equipment of the 19th century and will explain its use. The guide will tell tales and stories of the history of the Steam distillery Van Kleef and its products.

Of course a tasting of the unique Liquors and Jenevers is included in the tour.

Delegates are invited to attend the Dental Dinner in the evening of Friday 14th September. More details will be available nearer the time.

Saturday 15th September 2007

The Royal Tour (3 hours)

This tour consists of an extensive guided city tour by touring car. Part of the tour will be
walked though. During the 3 hours of the tour you will learn all about the history of the
Dutch Monarchy.

You will visit the Beach resort Scheveningen with its beautiful boulevard, and you will see
the fisherman’s village. Perhaps you might catch a glimpse of one of the few fisherman’s
wives in traditional costume.

After seeing Scheveningen, you will visit “Panorama Mesdag”, the biggest painting in the
Netherlands. In Panorama Mesdag, painted by H.W. Mesdag, you will relive the life of
Scheveningen in 1881 and you will experience the illusion of an unhindered view of a dune
top, with the sun breaking through the clouds.

The tour will take you along the Dutch Palaces, amongst others Palace Noordeinde, former Palace Lange Voorhout and Palace Kneuterdijk.

The tour ends of course with a visit to the Ridderzaal; THE
centre of political life in the Netherlands.

Sunday 16th September 2007

Delft City, Original Blue Delft Earthenware and Madurodam Tour (5½ hours)

This tour will take you to the old city of Delft, renowned for its many canals and its famous
earthenware. You will visit a ceramics workshop. After returning to The Hague you will
visit Madurodam, the smallest city of the Netherlands.

You will be taken to the city of Delft by touring car. Delft is world famous for its “Original Blue Delft” earthenware. The many canals in the historic city centre give Delft it’s nickname “Small Amsterdam”. You will start your visit to Delft with a city walk of 90 minutes through the historic centre.

Then you will visit the earthenware workshops of “De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles”, where masterpainters will demonstrate the production of the world famous “Delfts Blauw”. The tour takes you through the workshop and along the private collection of The Porceleyne Fles.

After returning to the Hague by touring car you will visit Madurodam. Madurodam is the “smallest city of the Netherlands” and there are many well known and lesser known sights to be seen: Buildings like the Peace Palace and the Palace on the Dam in Amsterdam, but also mills and tulip fields are reproduced on an exact scale of 1 : 25. The newest modeltrains are travelling the 4,5 km of train rails. You can see many planes on Schiphol Airport and also in the Rotterdam harbour there is always some action going on. And after seeing the cheese market in
Alkmaar and the St. Jan’s Cathedral in ‘s Hertogenbosch you can tell back home that you visited the Netherlands in just ONE afternoon!
